Causes
I write about characters who are going through some intense emotional journeys, many of them from psychological abuse, wartime trauma, and physical trauma. For those going through similar journeys, never give up. I promise you, there is life beyond abuse and trauma.
If you want to find supportive sites to help deal with issues triggered as you read, or have lingering issues you still want to deal with and overcome, here are some places you can go for support and advice. They're also wonderful places for you to support financially, if you're able to, so they can continue the good work they do. Throughout this year, as I am able, I plan to contribute to each of these Causes.
As I am touched by additional causes related to characters in my books, I'll share them here. I know from the e-mails and private messages I receive from readers that my books often draw in readers who have suffered similarly in their pasts, so I hope they can find new resources at these sites to help them continue on their journey to healing. I am sure there are many other sites that help, but these are the ones that had the greatest impact on me at this time.
Supported Causes
As promised on Facebook in January, I will be making a donation to the Wounded Warrior Project. I chose this charity because of its work on PTSD, as well as physically wounded warriors, as well as the support they provide for families. Nobody's Perfect is going to be co-dedicated to Dane Sattler, a young Iraq War veteran who took his life on his first attempt in January 2011. His mother, Sue, one of my readers, shared him with me and others on Facebook and the heartbreak left behind is something I hope the WWP can help other families with before another family has to go through this kind of tragedy.
All of my heroes in Masters at Arms (the RESCUE ME series introduction) have scars from the battlefield, but Damian continues to be plagued by PTSD flashbacks and nightmares from the horrors he lived through on a rooftop in Fallujah. Many military veterans and family members have recommended this as an organization that walks the walk with them. God bless all who have served. If you know someone who might be suffering silently, please reach out to them or go here to find out where they can get support.
Another charity that speaks to me because of Damian is this one. As readers know, Damian rides a Harley and he also rides with this group. When invited by the families of the fallen, they put out the call to their members to attend the funerals to pay their respects and provide protection against protests and disruptions of any kind.
Two characters my readers have been introduced to--Savannah Gentry (now Savi Baker) and Cassie Lopez--have been the victims of sexual violence. A fellow writer told me about this organization. It's geared to both male and female victims and provides contacts locally or nationally to help those on their journey to becoming healthy survivors.
This is another great site that provides hope and help for those people struggling with depression, addiction, self-injury, and suicide. This site came to me from one of my psychology resources, who said Savi had her up at 5:30 a.m. telling her to tell me about it. Savi (as Savannah) had been suicidal and also a "cutter" so this has been a very good resource. And the day my resource told me about the site, I heard from a friend whose 16-year-old niece had attempted suicide, so I was able to share the link with her and hope it provided some help to them, as well.
